This e-learning course describes the use of Performance Based Navigation (PBN) in the TMA, specifically RNAV1 which within Europe historically has been called Precision RNAV (P-RNAV). The e-learning addresses aircraft functionality, the benefits of RNAV SIDs/STARs, the different types of waypoint and how turn performance is affected, and a number of ATC best practices, including RTF phraseology, specifically related to RNAV operations.  Although the package does not spell out the European Commission's PBN Implementing Rule (PBN IR) explicitly, RNAV 1 is the minimum requirement for SIDs/STARs and these are expected to be implemented over the next decade.
The objectives of this training module are as follows:
- To describe Area Navigation and outline its current and future use in TMAs.
- To define the aircraft capabilities required for Performance Based Navigation (PBN) in TMAs.
- To describe the different types of RNAV SID/STAR and outline their advantages.
- To describe the different types of Waypoint, describing how they affect aircraft turns.
- To outline some ATC best practice with regard to specific instructions, i.e. 'DIRECT TO'.
- To describe how ATC uses aircraft capability indicators to assign appropriate SIDs/STARs.
- To state any RTF phraseology specific to PBN.
Primarily ATCOs, but of interest to all other ATM-related personnel.
