Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems - A Regulatory Overview [GEN-RPAS-REG]

Classroom Course

The GEN-RPAS-REG course provides an overview of the standards and regulation on RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems). This includes standards, requirements and rules from ICAO, JARUS, FAA and EASA. The course focuses also on the changes introduced by the new Basic Regulation that extended the mandate of EASA to drones of any mass, and presents the implementing rules and delegated acts as well as the differences among open, specific and certified categories of operations. Industrial standards for manufacture/operation of drones and competence of remote pilots are also included. Part of the course is then devoted to the exploration and practical application of the Specific Operations Safety Assessment (SORA) methodology, that is the emerging standard tool for safety assessment of RPAS operations in the specific category and an EASA Acceptable Mean of Compliance (AMC) for this task.
This course does not train participants to execute a specific regulatory or operational task linked to non-military drones. The course instead intends to provide attendees with a thorough insight in the overall scenario related to drones, including the societal point of view.

Provide the landscape of evolving standards, requirements and rules at ICAO, JARUS, FAA and European level.
Familiarise attendees with the key principles of emerging rules across the aviation domains (organisations, airworthiness, competence of remote pilots, operations, detect and avoid, command and control data link, airspace integration etc.).
Inform on expected developments at international level and on rules applicable in Europe both at common and national level.
Provide attendees with an understanding of the safety related aspects of operations involving non-military drones, including the emerging methodology for their assessment (SORA)

Professionals from industry wishing to acquire initial familiarisation with drones, or wishing to understand the context around their specific task.
Staff of aviation authorities (potentially) dealing with non-military drones for policy development, rulemaking, certification, licensing and oversight.
