UAS Safety Assessment Methodologies for ATM Actors [GEN-RPAS-SAF]

The risk-based regulatory framework for UAS established by Regulations (EU) 2019/947 and (EU) 2019/945 is based on the definition of three categories of operations: open, specific and certified. Operations in the specific category require that a risk assessment is prepared and submitted to the CAA for evaluation and approval. On 9 October 2019, EASA published Acceptable Means of Compliance (AMC) and Guidance Material (GM) to Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/947, in which the use of the Specific Operations Risk Assessment (SORA) methodology is recommended to apply for an authorisation in the specific category. SORA will also be used to define Standard Scenarios and Pre-Defined-Risk-Assessment (PDRA). At the same time the SESAR 2020 CORUS Project is developing the MEthoDology for the U-Space Safety Assessment (MEDUSA) for identifying and managing hazards posed by drone traffic in the U-Space. MEDUSA considers the outcome of different SORA assessment, prepared by UAS operators, and integrates those results in a single U-Space safety assessment.
The course aims at providing an overview of both SORA and MEDUSA to allow participants to understand the principles of the two methodologies from the perspectives of the UAS operators, the ANSP, the U-Space providers and the authority.

-Participants should be able to understand the concepts of the Specific Operations Risk Assessment (SORA) methodology.

-Participants should be able to understand the concepts of the MEthoDology for the U-Space Safety Assessment (MEDUSA).

-Participants from the competent authorities should be able to assist in the review of the application received from the drone operators and in the interaction with relevant external services (ATM and/or U-Space).

-Participants should be able to understand how SORA and MEDUSA deal with the risk related to UAS operations in controlled airspace and/or with the support of U-space services.
-Personnel of competent authorities that need to evaluate applications based on SORA.

-Personnel of service providers  that want to  understand how SORA and MEDUSA deal with the interaction between UAS and other traffic.

-Personnel of UAS industry, remote pilots, instructors and other aviation professionals who want to understand how to apply the SORA methodology.

No fee applies for course participants from Member States’ competent authorities and certified organisations. The training cost is sponsored by the EUROCONTROL Work Programme.
