This is the first of a series of three courses on AIXM Version 5 and Aeronautical Datasets.

This course introduces the basic technical concepts used by AIXM 5, such as UML, XML and GML and is intended for AIS operational personnel who are not yet familiar with these concepts.

Note: UML and XML are also used for data modelling and data coding in the meteorological and flight domains, for the IWXXM and FIXM specifications respectively. Thus, this course may also be useful for operational people, from other aviation domains, who are interested in any of these “XMs”.

The course has been created in the context of the revision to ICAO Annex 15 and the introduction of a new PANS-AIM that entered into force on 8th November 2018. This revision accelerates the “digital transition” of AIS, from the provision of paper documents towards the provision of digital data sets. The Aeronautical Information Exchange Model (AIXM) version 5.1(.1) provides the technical specification for the coding of the aeronautical data contained in the digital AIS data sets.

Note: Part 2 (AIXM 5 purpose, scope and design concepts) and Part 3 (AIXM 5 coding and provision of the Digital Data Sets) of this series are still under development. Part 2 is due to be available in the second half of 2021.
Important Note
AIXM 5.1.1 is a minor update of AIXM 5.1. The data is fully forward-backward compatible. This course is intended for version 5.1.1. However, because of the high similarity between the two models, the course is fully relevant for AIXM 5.1 users.
Objectives

  • Explain the use of UML class diagrams in AIXM
  • Create a small UML class diagram
  • Validate an XML file using an XML editor
  • Explain how XML can be used for the coding of the data that corresponds to a UML class diagram model
  • Discuss the importance of using geographical data standards in the aeronautical information domain
  • Explain the concept of a geodetic reference system
  • Describe the purpose and content of the Aviation GML Profile
  • Visualise a GML file that contains AIXM/GML data
