What are Pan-European Network Services (PENS)? What is the Flight Message Transfer Protocol (FMTP)? What is All-Purpose Structured EUROCONTROL Surveillance Information Exchange (ASTERIX), and what technology is used to distribute surveillance data? What is the AFTN/CIDIN, and how is it evolving worldwide to AMHS, the ATS Message Handling System? What is the role of the Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) in all these developments? These questions - and more - are answered in this course, which provides a comprehensive overview of the data communication applications, technology and infrastructure used in aviation. After a reminder of data communication technology basics and an overview of operational issues, the following topics are covered in detail: Surveillance Data Formats and Distribution, Flight Data Formats and Distribution, the Network Manager Operations Center (former CFMU) and EAD communications infrastructure, Online Data Interchange (OLDI), the Flight Message Transport Protocol (FMTP), AMHS etc. Underlying the whole course is the development of the Pan-European Network Services over IP, the “PENS” and its evolution "NewPENS". The relationship with the “SWIM” concept is also addressed. The relevant Single European Sky Implementing Rule and Community Specifications for FMTP and AMHS are examined, as well as corresponding aspects of SESAR2020.
The course starts with a technological reminder, but some background knowledge of data communication systems is useful.
After completing the course, participants will have a good understanding of the “big picture” of ATM ground communication systems and future strategic developments. In addition, participants will have information and skills that will assist them in practical deployment plans.
The course is designed for those who want to obtain an overview of ground data communications technologies, networks and applications used in aviation, i.e. technical, operational and managerial staff. It may also be of interest to NSA staff involved in corresponding system approval.
