Significantly updated in 2020, this general course is the entry point to the more detailed COM courses in the portfolio. The red thread is NewPENS, the international IP network deployed in Europe to support the exchange of various operational data flows including surveillance, flight data exchange (with the OLDI application and the FMTP protocol), messaging (AMHS), as well as EAD and Network Manager (NM) flows.
The course enhancements cover the technical details of NewPENS as well as new intended applications using NewPENS such as Voice over IP, Data Link, ans SWIM applications.

The relevant Single European Sky Implementing Rules and Community Specifications are examined, as well as corresponding worldwide strategies and SESAR2020 developments.
Prerequisites
The course starts with a technological reminder, but some background knowledge of data communication systems is useful.
Objectives
After completing the course, participants will have a good understanding of the “big picture” of ATM data communication systems and future strategic developments. In addition, participants will have information and skills that will assist them in practical deployment plans.
Audience
The course is designed for those who want to obtain an overview of  data communications technologies, networks and applications used in aviation, i.e. technical, operational and managerial staff. It may also be of interest to NSA staff involved in corresponding system approval.

No fee applies for course participants from Member States’ competent authorities and certified organisations. The training cost is sponsored by the EUROCONTROL Work Programme. The price per course participant from other organisations or individuals is 1600 EUR.
