Today’s ATM system relies heavily on software systems in order to be able to function efficiently. In an industry in which safety is so important, the supporting software is equally important. This course provides guidance on the management of software safety assurance activities for ATM systems. The course addresses the concepts of safety assessment as per Regulation N° 2017/373 and its associated AMC/GM.
Central to the course are the following :
  • EUROCAE Document ED-153 (Guidelines for ANS Software Safety Assurance) and
  • EUROCAE Document 109A (Software integrity assurance considerations for CNS/ATM) systems.
The complete software lifecycle is addressed, including planning, identification of software requirements, allocation of software assurance levels (SWALs), compliance with SWALs, and audits and reviews.
For service providers and competent authorities: The SAF-CHG-Intro course and SAF-CHG-AC-1 must be successfully completed before this course is followed.
For contractors/industry: The introduction to Regulation N° 2017/373 for the industry (SAF-CHG-IND) must be successfully completed before this course is followed.
Important Note
This course replaces course SAF-SW.
This course is consistent with Regulation No. 2017/373 ( laying down common requirements for service providers and the oversight in air traffic management/air navigation services and other air traffic management network functions) and its relevant Acceptable Means of Compliance (AMC) and Guidance Material (GM).
After completing the course, participants will be able to describe the software safety assurance process, its relationship with the overall risk assessment activity and its relationship with existing industry software standards (ED-109A and ED-153).
In addition, participants will be able to
  • Assist in the conduct of a software safety assessment, and;
  • Assit in the creation of a software safety case.
This course is designed for those involved in software development and/or maintenance, those involved in the assessment of software development processes, and manufacturers of ATM equipment.
It may also be of interest to CA staff involved in the oversight of requirements related to software.
