This module provides a basic foundation of knowledge and understanding of the principles used in data processing and explains their use in current and future ATM operations. It describes flight plan processing functions and the possibilities offered by a state-of-the-art flight data processing system, through the presentation of both core and advanced functions which make possible the safe, efficient and environmentally-friendly management of air traffic. The module goes on to describe the functions related to surveillance data processing. In addition to classical surveillance techniques, there is a strong emphasis on the most recent techniques, such as Mode S, ADS-B and multilateration. The module describes how these are integrated and processed in the various functional blocks along the surveillance chain. The module also contains a description of the controller support tools which are expected to be implemented in the near future to improve safety and increase the capacity of the ATM system.
