Understanding the Data Processing Chain in ATM [DPS-DPC]

Classroom Course
This course provides a basic foundation knowledge and understanding of the principles used in ATM data processing (Flight Data Processing (FDP), Surveillance Data Processing (SDP) and added value functions) and an overview of their use in ATM operations. The course describes the core functions associated with flight plan processing and the advanced functions offered by a state-of-the art flight data processing system. All data processing aspects are related to the Single European Sky (SES) Implementing Rules and regulations together with the relevant aspects of the SES ATM Research Programme (SESAR). Flight data processing aspects are covered, with particular emphasis on the associated SES Implementing Rules and specifications. Examples include the Implementing Rules on Interoperability on Initial Flight Plan (IFPL) and Co-ordination and Transfer (COTR), the latter supported by the EUROCONTROL Specification for On-Line Data Interchange (OLDI). The functions associated with surveillance data processing are also covered during the course. Besides the classical surveillance techniques there is a strong emphasis on the most recent techniques like Mode S, ADS-B and Multilateration: how do they work, how are they integrated and processed in the different functional blocks along the surveillance chain? Where are we today with these techniques and where do we go to, based on the applicable strategies, i.e. Infrastructure and Information Management. In addition, the course explains how the different Implementing Rules (Surveillance Performance and Interoperability and Mode S IC allocation) have an impact on surveillance systems and provides an overview of the technical pillar of SES, i.e. SESAR, and of the proposed time line, based on the ATM Master Plan.
Prerequisites
Participants should have knowledge of conventional ATC techniques and will need a high level of conversational English language proficiency.
Objectives
After completing the course, participants will have an understanding of the principles used in flight data processing and have received an overview of their use in today’s and tomorrow’s ATM operations.
Audience
This course is designed for operational and technical staff with an interest in data processing within ATC systems.
Certificate awarded
All candidates will receive a certificate of attendance.
