This module provides a basic understanding of the Earth’s properties, the various ways it is possible to navigate in aviation and the specific systems used to perform accurate navigation today. The module will review the development of navigation techniques and consider the basics of navigation, including the Earth’s magnetic influence. The module then addresses means of navigation and discusses the important aspects of accuracy and integrity and their link to continuity and availability.
The module goes on to introduce terrestrial and space-based navigation systems and considers how each system provides its signals and the limitations of the transmitted information. The module also covers on-board autonomous systems, such as inertial navigation systems and barometric altimetry. The module concludes with the linking of the navigation sensors to specific navigation specifications which are detailed in the ICAO performance based navigation (PBN) concept.

After completing the course, participants will have covered the Basic Training objectives contained in the EUROCONTROL Specification for Air Traffic Safety Electronics Personnel Common Core Content Initial Training Edition 1.0, dated 27.8.2009, for the subject Navigation (NAV).
This course is designed for those wishing to follow a career which involves operational safety related tasks in ATM and those seeking to complete a part of the minimum training requirement for ATSEP Basic Training.
Candidates passing the examination will receive a certificate of accomplishment. Other candidates will receive a certificate of attendance.
No fee applies for course participants from Member States’ competent authorities and certified organisations. The training cost is sponsored by the EUROCONTROL Work Programme.
The price per course participant from other organisations or individuals is 900 EUR.
