ATM Software Safety Assessment [SAF-SW]

Classroom Course
  • Case studies with experts
  • Practical exercises
Today’s ATM system relies heavily on software systems to function efficiently. In an industry where safety is so important, the supporting software is equally important. This is recognised in the current European ATM regulatory framework, with requirements for software development published by the European Community. This course provides guidance on the management of software safety assurance activities for ATM systems.
The course addresses the concepts of safety assessment within the context of the EUROCONTROL Safety Assessment Methodology (SAM) and EC Regulation No 482/2008 establishing a software safety assurance system to be implemented by air navigation service providers. Central to the course is EUROCAE Document ED-153 (Guidelines for ANS Software Safety Assurance). The complete software lifecycle is addressed, including planning, identification of software requirements, allocation of software assurance levels (SWALs), compliance with SWALs, and audits and reviews. Aspects related to safety assessment (Risk Assessment and Risk Mitigation) activities, procurement and contracting are presented along with practical exercises to reinforce understanding.
The course includes an introduction to the new regulation 2017/373 and its possible impact on software safety activities.
Prerequisites
It is strongly recommended that participants previously follow the Introduction to Safety Assessment Methodology (SAF-SA1) course. Participants should also be familiar with software and software engineering concepts and it is recommended that participants following this course be familiar with EC Regulation 482:2008 and one of the following:
  • ISO 12207 (Systems and Software Engineering – Software Life Cycle Processes);
  • ED-109A (Guidelines for CNS/ATM Systems Software Integrity Assurance); or
  • CMMI-Dev.
Objectives
After completing the course, participants will be able to describe the ANS software safety assurance process, its relationship with the overall risk assessment activity and its relationship with existing industry software standards.
In addition, participants will be able to assist in the conduct of a software safety assessment.
Please note that it is recommended that participants following this course be familiar with EC Regulation 482:2008 and one of the following:
  • ISO 12207 (Systems and Software Engineering – Software Life Cycle Processes);
  • ED-109A (Guidelines for CNS/ATM Systems Software Integrity Assurance); or
  • CMMI-Dev.
Audience
This course is designed for those involved in software development and/or maintenance, those involved in the assessment of software development processes, and manufacturers of ATM equipment. It may also be of interest to NSA staff involved in the oversight of requirements related to software.
Certificate awarded
All candidates will receive a certificate of attendance.
